Intercom Pricing: It's Not $29/Month

Intercom's pricing page says "from $29/seat/month." Teams regularly report bills of $1,500-4,000/month. Here's where the money goes.

The Seat Prices

Annual billing. Monthly billing costs 15-35% more.

PlanAnnualWhat you actually get
Essential$29/seatChat + inbox + help center. No workflows. No automation builder. 78% upgrade within 6 months.
Advanced$85/seat+ Workflows, multiple inboxes, round-robin, custom reports, 20 Lite seats.
Expert$132/seat+ SSO, HIPAA, SLAs, multi-brand, workload management, 50 Lite seats.

No free plan. Never has been. The old Starter plan ($74-79/mo) was killed in 2023-2024.

With Supp: No seats. Period. Your team can be 5 people or 50. You pay $0.20 per classified message, $0.30 per automated action. That's it.

Fin AI: The $0.99 Nobody Budgeted For

Fin is good. Intercom claims 60-67% autonomous resolution rates. But at $0.99 per resolution, it adds up fast.

Monthly Fin resolutionsFin costSame volume with Supp
500$495/mo$100/mo
1,000$990/mo$200/mo
2,000$1,980/mo$400/mo

A resolution is charged when the customer confirms Fin helped OR leaves without asking for more. Not charged when: customer asks for a human, a Procedure fails, or Fin only responds to a greeting.

The Other Add-Ons

Essential gives you 10 Copilot conversations/teammate/month. After that, Copilot stops working unless you pay $35/seat.

Common Billing Surprises

The $29 trap. Essential has no workflow builder, no automation, no multiple inboxes. 78% of teams on Essential upgrade within 6 months. The real starting price is $85/seat.

Fin costs are unpredictable. Teams budget for seats but forget about per-resolution AI charges. One user reported going from $4k/month to $9k/month after enabling Fin for 40 agents.

Copilot has a usage cap. You get 10 Copilot conversations per teammate per month for free. After that, it stops working. Unlimited Copilot is $35/seat/month extra.

Proactive Support is a separate product. Product Tours, Surveys, In-app Posts, Mobile Push: all locked behind the $99/month Proactive Support Plus add-on.

Annual contracts auto-renew. 30 days written notice required before renewal. No prorated refunds. Cancellation requires speaking to an Account Manager.

Early Stage Discount (If You Qualify)

Under $10M in funding and fewer than 15 employees? Intercom's Early Stage Program gives 90% off Year 1, 50% off Year 2, 25% off Year 3, plus 300 free Fin resolutions. One-time opportunity. Once you leave, the discount is gone permanently.

If you qualify, it's worth using. Just budget for the full price from Year 4 onward.

The Alternative

Supp does AI classification and routing for $0.20/message. No seats. No Copilot fee. No Proactive add-on. 1,000 tickets/month = ~$200. Intercom handles that same volume for $1,000+.

Supp isn't a full Intercom replacement. No product tours, no proactive messaging, no in-app surveys. But if your main cost is per-seat pricing and AI resolution fees, the math is hard to ignore.
